Within each organization, there are always those people you can go to for questions and get really great answers. Here at Marco, one of those people is Kevin Schmidt. As our Regional Sales Director for Wisconsin and Illinois, Kevin is a proven business leader who’s highly skilled and knowledgeable in both sales and management. We put out a call for Marco employees to send us questions that we would have Kevin answer. As it turned out, the Q&A was filled with helpful information that was also a testament to Marco’s culture of mentorship.
In the 45 years that Marco has been in business, there has been no greater indicator of success than employee happiness. Our employees are what make Marco the company it is today. They are the ones helping customers, building relationships with vendors and supporting our communities. Without our employees, there’s no way Marco would be able to grow, scale and accomplish everything we currently do.
Welcome to Part 3 of our career development series. This post will be quite a bit like Part 2 where I shared the career development stories of a few Marco employees. The difference is that the stories featured here are of individuals who came to Marco as entry-level employees. All three stories feature someone who was just finishing college or high school and looking for their first career opportunity. We’re so thankful they found it at Marco.
In my last blog, I took an in-depth look at why Marco is a great place to build a career. I covered a lot of the ways we are intentional about being a company where working hard, along with participating within the company and throughout the community, can help you get noticed and on your way to building a career you can be proud of. In today’s blog, I’ll be sharing some stories of Marco employees who did just that.
Here at Marco, we’re pretty big on career development. In fact, we’ve even developed a bit of a catchphrase about the topic: A good place to work and a great place to build a career. I like the way that phrase sounds, and I like what it stands for. Even more than that, I know it to be true. In previous posts, I’ve covered quite a bit about the first part, Marco as a good place to work, but I haven’t focused as much on the second part, Marco as a great place to build a career.
Back in February, I started sharing the Marco Gold Standard with all of you. It’s a philosophy we’ve developed to ensure Marco’s culture stays strong as our company continues to grow and expand. Today, we’re kicking off Gold Standard Week, where we’ll be focusing on all four pillars that make up our Gold Standard. If you haven’t had the chance, you can learn about our Gold Standard here.
It might sound cliché, but our employees truly are an extension of our brand. And as we continue to grow, we’re committed to focusing on our employees and creating an environment where they can be happy with their workplace, committed to their roles and dedicated to their personal well-being. Here’s a look at how and why we do it.
As I covered last month, the Marco Gold Standard has four pillars: client satisfaction, vendor partnerships, community support and employee engagement. These pillars work together to help Marco maintain a strong culture, especially during times of growth and change. Today, I’ll be discussing the pillar of community support in greater detail.
Here at Marco, we've experienced a lot of growth in a short period of time. Just looking at the last five years, we've more than doubled our number of employees: from just over 500 employees in 2012 to just over 1,100 employees today. There's no doubt about it, this level of growth is exciting. We've always been very proud of our culture, the communities we serve and the partnerships we build with customers and vendors. And with our recent growth, the question has become this: how do we maintain our culture and all the things we're proud of as we grow?
We do it with the Marco Gold Standard.
Creating and sustaining a strong corporate culture takes time, intention and a lot of passion. And in many ways, the sustained growth and success of our organization is due to the company culture we cultivate. One way Marco builds community is through our Social Squad.
