In one scenario, The Twelve Days of Christmas was a game, which dates back to 1780. This "memory-and-forfeits" game had the leader recite a verse, and each of the players repeated it. Then, the leader would add a verse to the first, and so on, until one of the players made a mistake. The mistaken player’s penalty would be to give a kiss or a sweet treat.

In the second scenario, the twelve days of Christmas represent the twelve days of celebration between Jesus’ birth (Christmas Day) and his baptism (Epiphany). Each gift was representative of a religious symbol, with the “True Love” referring to God, the “turtle doves” as the Old and New Testament, and so on.
