FACILITY SECURITY

“All of the interior cameras in the new system design allow us to quickly check on a suspected shoplifter. In doing so, we found out that they were in teams with partners we did not know about. This allowed us to be on the lookout for additional people.”

DVR SYSTEM HELPS LIQUOR STORES IDENTIFY AND REDUCE SHOPLIFTING INCIDENTS

After renting space for many years, the City of Columbia Heights built two new high-volume Top Valu Liquor stores in 2007. As a leader in the liquor business in the area, they knew that a key component to running an efficient operation was to implement a quality security system.

Bill Elrite, Finance Director, said they had looked at several security system providers and learned more about the March Networks DVR system at a Marco seminar. The City’s relationship with Marco dates back to 2001 with the implementation of their wireless network. “We chose Marco because they are a technology leader and because of the expertise of their staff,” said Elrite.

The Solution

In addition to an eight camera security system at the City’s Heights Liquor Store, Marco installed a 36 camera March Networks DVR system at their new Top Valu store on Central Avenue and a 28 camera system at their new Top Valu store on 37th Avenue.

Digital cameras were installed throughout multiple areas of their stores such as the retail and loading areas to help monitor and reduce employee theft and shoplifting incidents and increase security for their customers and employees. Top Valu Liquor Store operations manager Larry Scott explained, “All of the interior cameras in the new system design allows us to quickly check on a suspected shoplifter. In doing so, we found that the shoplifters were in teams with partners we did not know about. This allowed us to be on the lookout for additional people.”

They have reviewed several incidents already for shoplifting, forgeries, and alarm setoffs. Cheray Crossman from the City’s Police Department likes the quality of the cameras. “The footage that we look at is major clear. We are very impressed with the picture clarity of the video footage and the news media was impressed as well following a recent break-in.”

Elrite added, “The installation of the camera system went very smoothly – as smooth as one could desire. The cameras have really helped us with shoplifting incidents. When we come into the store, we’ll notice that some of the higher priced items are gone. We then can search video footage and check it against our inventory and sales records.”

He said that the pictures from the video footage print out very clearly and and are given to staff to watch for shoplifters. Elrite is also able to check what’s going on at the liquor store remotely from his home computer.

Jeff Hanson from the City’s IT Department likes the fact that Marco can remotely help him with questions and service related issues quickly. “When I’ve had to call Marco, they have been very responsive,” said Hanson. “They are able to troubleshoot a lot of things over the phone.”

In closing, Elrite said, “Overall we are very pleased with the system. Steve Marsden (Marco Technology Advisor) has been fantastic after the sale. He makes sure we are taken care of and continues to be a contact person for us if there is a problem.”
