The Solution
Discussions with fellow-colleagues led Darrin Strosahl, Principal of Kingsland High School, to start researching options for a video surveillance system for ISD #2137. He found that their District was one of few left that did not have a video surveillance system implemented in their school. In 2005, the timing was right to add security since the District was doing some reconstruction at the building entrance of their High School.

Darrin researched a couple of different vendors to find the best system to meet their needs, one of which was Marco. Darrin worked with Ryan Hilgers, Marco Video Specialist, to learn about the features of the March Networks video systems. “Once we started looking at features and pricing, we found Marco to be our best option,” said Darrin. “We liked the variety of products and camera styles Marco had to offer.”

In May 2005, Marco implemented a March Networks 4210 Digital Video System for the District and originally installed 15 cameras and a digital video recorder (DVR) at their High School. In August 2005, Marco installed an additional four cameras and another DVR at the High School, four cameras and a DVR at their Middle School, and four cameras and a DVR at their Elementary School.

Since the system has been installed, the High School has been able to retrieve and resolve instances such as locker thefts, fights, etc., thus providing a safer environment for their students and staff. Darrin explained, “During break times, we may have 300 kids moving through the hallways at the same time. Our DVR system has been an additional way to provide supervision and act as a deterrent.” When an incident does occur, they are able to view it on their computer as proof, and they also have a reliable backup of the scenes. Darrin went on, “The system allows us to determine unusual student traffic patterns. For example, if a student is leaving class to use the restroom at the same time every day, we can monitor where they are going.”

The system allows for remote access to the DVR system. Darrin said, “There are many times when we have people in the building for after-school activities and I want to check to make sure all the doors are closed, etc. without having to go back to the school. I can do this right from my laptop at home.” The DVR system works in conjunction with their electronic key system to help them monitor who is accessing their building.

Darrin felt the installation of their March Networks DVR system went very smoothly. He said, “The best part of the installation was that Marco was willing to listen to our input. We wanted cameras installed in specific areas to cover multiple directions of the area. They were willing to work with us to design a system that fit our particular needs.”

He added, “I tell the folks that I talk to that the March Networks DVR has been a good system for us. It is very simple to use the basic features such as searching video and identifying areas with the cameras. And Marco has been responsive to any service issues that have come up as well.”
